Hotel Finance Foundations
Read a hotel P&L, distinguish department from undistributed, and explain GOP vs. NOI to a colleague who's never seen a financial statement.
When you finish this course…
- Read the four sections of a USALI P&L without explanation
- Distinguish departmental from undistributed operating expenses fluently
- Calculate GOP, NOI, and the three margins above and below
- Spot the three financial statements that don't reconcile
- Explain why an owned-by hotel and a managed hotel have different P&Ls
About this course
Hotel finance is its own dialect — USALI, departmental vs. undistributed, GOP, NOI, EBITDA, FF&E — and most operators learn it by being humiliated in a budget meeting. This course teaches the dialect in three hours so you don't have to.
You'll read a real USALI P&L; learn why your GM only reads the top four lines and what that costs the property; calculate GOP and NOI three different ways; and understand the three financial statements that don't reconcile unless someone is doing the work.
Foundation for the Practitioner-level Finance track. Targeted at non-finance department heads, junior controllers, and anyone moving from a department role into an ops director or GM track.
